Automattic secures $29.5 million
WordPress has pretty much changed the way I do things on the web since I starting using it a few years ago. I would say that just about everything web site related can be done with it. Forum, shopping cart, blogs, standard websites, you name it. It really is an amazing tool that has such a good community (not to mention the fine people that continue to develop it) that I really have to give a serious thought to why it can’t be used for just about everything website related. The plugins that people develop are really what make it worth its weight in gold. And everything is free. Not free like a soup line but free like giving away cars on Oprah to everyone in the studio audience.
I have always wondered how they made money to continue the development. I mean people have to eat and put a roof over their head. Sure they have investors like every other cool web application/startup these days. But are they eating bologna or are they eating steak?
Well I seen this note the other day and was amazed at just how much they just received with their last round of funds. $29.5 million!
Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, just secured a $29.5 million B round of financing. Congrats to Matt, Toni, and everyone else at Automattic. $29.5 million is a monster round, considering that Automattic has so far grown by sipping daintily on a $1.2 million first round secured in 2006. I can’t wait to see what is next. Really interesting to me is that with this round the New York Times joins their investors. One word for that: adaptation. The line between old media and new media blurs further. – jump
I wonder what new adventures WordPress holds over the next few years! Only time will tell I guess. Great job WordPress team!

Most of us have our blogs hosted on our own servers. Do those who use the default have ads and such? That is maybe what these investors are banking on – ad revenue.
I will agree with you on the setup. Mostly the plugins. The structure and ability to turn the on/off from a centralized location is so huge.
I don’t think they have adds on the WordPress hosted site. But I am not positive. I thought I read something about them banning any themes that have adds in them.
