Well, I finally broke down and got router. I am paying $60 a month with Mediacom for 12Mbps. I can’t remember the last time I had over 4Mbps running into The House of Husar. It has been bad at only 1-3 for the past week or so. To put is bluntly it has been pissing me off. I am ready to switch to Qwest since they are having a great deal right now in my area. 12 month at $30 for a 12Mbps line with no contract. Plus they put in a $125 American Express card. Can’t really say no to that. If they suck then I go back to Mediacom I guess.
But back to the router. I ended up getting an Apple Airport Extreme. I just couldn’t decide on anything else so I choose Apple. I can have a USB networked hard drive plus USB wireless printing. It seemed like the Apple fanboy thing to do. So after work I picked it up and installed the thing in about 5 minutes. Speed before on the Linksys rounter was 2-3Mbps. After installing the Apple beauty. 11-12_Mbps. Holy crapola! I have never got that kind of speed ever… in my life.
Now I know the Airport is n and my old Linksys was only g but come on. Something has to be wrong with the Linksys. I now have coverage out on the back deck and in the garage and front porch. My upload speed did not really change so that is a little odd since if the Linksys was broke you think that would be impacted.
Pretty happy all the way around right now. Here are before and after photos plus the speed test is above.

Tucked nicely into the back of the fireplace hidden compartment.

Cool man. Nice speed upgrade for the price of a new router. Sweet deal there.
Still getting killer speeds so it was the router for sure. I have not put a networked hard drive or printer on it yet. I’ll get those going this weekend.
Kudos for ditching the LinkSys. You know how I feel about those routers. Oh, and internet high-five for joining a service without a contract. I really wish I could do the same over here, but we’re held captive by the monopoly we call our cable company.
Loving the AirPort Extreme. I should have a hard drive networked on it as soon as I get some more time to mess with it.
Cool…I think it’s time to ditch my Dlink and upgrade. Both our laptops here should be n so we should be getting more speed.
I am loving the AirPort extreme Mike. Well worth the money.
