1:1000 – Group Photo Project #1: Numbers

These photos are for the weekly photo adventure a few friends and I recently started. Each week the theme changes and we rotate a member to pick a single word theme. This week the theme was Numbers selected by myself. If you would like to join the weekly group and start posting your photos just let me know. Also make sure you check out the other memeber of the group and their Numbers photos. Links are at the bottom.

Click on each photo to see larger version and photo details. Challenge for me on this shoot was the location. Shooting in my basement pub is, well, like shooting in a put. No outside light is available. I don’t have a flash other than built in so not much of an option except the natural like in the room.

Also make sure you check out the other member of the groups weekly photos for Numbers.

Here are the basic rules of the group.

* Each week is a new single word theme. Using a single word allows everyone to interpret it in their own way. This allows for more creativity possibly.
* Each theme starts on a Friday and ends on the following Friday.
* You must shoot your photos that week. You can’t submit anything you have shot in the past.
* Post your best 5 photos to your own website or blog each week based on the theme. Feel free to comment or tell a story about how you interpreted the theme that week. Or just post the photos.
* Post the camera, lens, ISO, shutter speed, and aperture used to capture the photo so more people can learn details.
* When you post your photos to your blog or website you then link to everyone that is participating that week. This does a few things for us. Gives us more exposure to our own blogs. Visitors can jump between all our posts/pages very easy.
* You should try to comment on everyone that is participating in the weekly theme. Try to give constructive criticism and encouragement. Maybe select which photo you like the most and why. Commenting is very important with this project!

  1. So was the Pub your initial thought when you came up with “numbers” for the theme last week? There’s plenty down there, for sure!

Guitar: You were using a tripod, right? I think your Tone adjuster knob was your focus point…but it still isn’t very sharp, probably 1/10sec was the reason if handheld.

Dart Mirror: So was this one a reflection from a mirror? Interesting shot! Only suggestion I have is a tighter framing…like 1/3 or 1/4 of the dartboard and the darts, it might make it more interesting provide a curved line for the eye to explore through the photo.

Pool Table(s): I like this first one better (it’s my favorite of the 5). Why? The angled line of the balls, with selective focus on the 8-ball is great….it’s a really nice flow diagonaly through the image, great shot! The second one doesn’t have the flow, and the almost dead center 8-ball focus doesn’t do much for me.

Amp: I like the idea, and the angle, but the numbering on the knobs is too small to even read. I’m thinking a tighter crop of the same idea may be better? I think you probably wanted to get most of the silver brand in there is why you framed it like you did though.

Neat tour through the numerical side of the House of Husar Pub though, but one thing I keep thinking about with this group of images is these are all things that come to life with motion: flying darts, pool balls being hit around, guitar being ripped, and amp blaring. Just something to think about. :-)

  2. I did not use a tripod on any of them when I should have. I did not shoot them until 11:30. :) Been down with some sickness lately so trying to get lots of rest.

But I had no idea on what I was going to shoot for Numbers when I made up the theme. Just kind of worked out that way I guess.

I am going to try and pick up some kind of silver reflector soon.

I want to get outside for the next shoot and try to get them in a little sooner in the week.

What is the theme for this week?

  3. Ed, yeah tripod man! Which would work for the suggestion I had for week two, 3-sided.

I just told CJ about using a silver reflector, and put a link to a nice 4-in-1 type on her post comments…check it out. http://thegreatdetox.blogspot.com/2008/03/11000-group-photo-friday-numbers.html
