Redbox? I’m Sold!
I have to say we have been renting a lot of movies from Redbox lately. Do you have a Redbox in your area? If not you are missing out.
Here in West Des Moines they have about 6 of them. They are at HyVee, Dahl’s, and about 4 McDonalds. Great locations for me with Hyvee and Dahl’s. I work right next to Hyvee and drive by Dahl’s on my way to the gym four days a week. DVD rentals are $1 per day and you rent them via a vending machine. You just use the kiosk to pick your movie then swipe your credit card. Excellent. No people to deal with at all. It just spits out the DVD like a soda machine. That is my kind of inovation!
But the reason I am making this post is that yesterday I wanted to see if they had a website and sure enough they do. You can find them at http://www.redbox.com/. Easy enough to remember. But I was very surprise that you can rent movies online via the redbox DVD vending machine in your area. You just create an account at http://www.redbox.com/. Select the location of the box you want to pick your DVD up at. Find the movie you want to rent. Redbox only shows the movies that are in machine at the time. Then you reserve it. You have about 24 hours to pick it up. When you get to the redbox you selected you just swipe the card you used to pay for the rental online and it gives you the movie. You don’t have to drive down there and then find out what you wanted to rent is not available.
Great service! I am sold.

Blogging geek Dad that loves to do long runs, ride his bikes, partake in frosty beverages, listen to live music, watch movies, hike high into the mountains, and hang out with his family doing any of the above. Oh, and write code late into the wee hours of the morning.
I heard that you and Marlee were going to cause some ‘trouble’ and go rent all the movies at the HyVee Redbox and return them to Dahl’s….. let me know how that goes. Pretty funny if you ask me!
(By the way, the Dahl’s by my house – 156th & Hickman, doesn’t have a Redbox, just an old fashion movie rental store)
Check out this site for free legal RedBox rentals http://www.insideredbox.com/. What they do is maintain a database on all the promotional codes for free RedBox movie rentals in your area. There are promo codes available everyday.
HyVee shut down their old fashion DVD rental now. I but the Dahl’s by your house will have one soon. But you can use the one at HyVee since you work right next to it like me.
I forget to mention about taking them back. You can take them back to any Redbox. Very cool.

I gave up on Netflix a while ago. Maybe when they have digital downloads AND they support Mac I might go back. IF (big one) they get their hooks into Apple TV I will be running back.
Why did you give up on netflix? What plan did you have (how many movies at a time)? How many movies were you going through a month?
NetFlix is supposed to have a watch now feature like they do for PC by the summer. Does RedBox have Blu-Rays? Interesting, the company who owns RedBox are also the ones that developed CoinStar.
Scott, I had netflix about two and a half years ago so I am sure they are better now. At the time I think I got 3 or 4 movies at a time. But it was taking 3 days for me to get the movies. I think they might have a dist. in Iowa now. Even Des Moines maybe? I bet it is much quicker. 1 day maybe?
Netflix was great for getting odd movies that I am not going to find in the Redbox. But Redbox does have the latest titles right away.
If someone was into ripping the movies they could go through as many as possible. They could just get them, rip them and send them back the next day. Then watch them at their leisure. If they are into that kind of thing, anyway.
Rod, no BL that I can see yet on the Redbox. Netflix would have it beat there.
I get two-day turn around on Netflix, Ed; stuff mailed today will return new titles Wednesday.. not trying to sell you on it or anything
A buddy of mine is into the ripping of TV show DVDs. He has been getting them from netflix (with next day turn around time), but thinks he found a throttle in their system. He pays $16.99/month for 3 at a time. If it costs $0.50 one-way to mail, that is $1.00 per DVD rental. After 17, they are losing money. Interestingly enough, at ~17 DVDs, his super fast turn around time goes to nothing until the next billing cycle.
Scott, there are lots of articles about “power users” being throttled down on NetFlix. They will let newbies get some new releases first, even if said new release was number one in a power user queue. Most of the movies I get are BR from NetFlix and I have been very impressed with the selection and quality. I will say I have not tried Red Box but I think both have a good place for everyone. Sure beats the video stores that still consider a new release a three year old movie.
Yep Reb Box Rocks….and I’m like Randy….I go to that insider site and grab the latet 10 codes….put them in my phone, and never have to worry about paying for any movies! I get the free Monday Movies text too…but usually don’t use them.
We tried Blockbuster for 6 months…awesome fast movoes since the dist is here in KC (one day turnaround) plus you can return them to any store and either pick somethink up or your next in que was sent right away. We just got to a point where we were slow with returning so it wasn’t worth it.
RedBox online is so nice though….esp. the days those hot titles are released…..you can reserve it!
If someone had a HTPC in their house they could rent and rip them. Then watch them when they wanted. That way you just keep them for one day.
Well, I have used two redbox codes in the last two days. They work great!
