iPhone App Review: ColorSplash
I am always looking for new iPhone photo apps to enhance the iPhone camera. This weekend I found ColorSplash for $1.99 and have been pleasantly surprised. The app allows you to isolate color on a photo and show the rest in black and white. I am sure you have seen the effect before.
For starters ColorSplash converts your photo to black and white. With your fingers you ‘paint’ on the image to reveal the original colors. There is only one brush size and I thought that was really limiting at first. But you have the ability to zoom in and out of the image so it really acts like an unlimited brush size. This works better than I was expecting. Getting into the tight areas like between the fingers in the basketball photo below was not a problem. There are 4 brush options for hard and soft edges as well. There is also an undo option that comes in handy.
Feature list:
- Undo any number of accidental brush strokes.
- Save multiple sessions.
- In-program help.
- Alternative view mode shows colored regions tinted red to make it easier to see and adjust the boundaries between color and black & white regions.
- Choose from 4 different brushes (hard or soft edged, opaque or transparent)
- Work in landscape or portrait orientation.
- Hide the toolbars in full screen mode.
Overall ColorSplash is great app to have in your photo editing arsenal on the iPhone. Here are a few quick examples. Each of these took between 15 seconds to about a minute to create.
Yes, her jacket really is the same color as the pumpkins. This is the original colors in the photo.

The rainbow colors of the creepy clown’s hair looks great with the rest of the photo in black and white.

Getting into the tight areas between the fingers was very easy to do with the zoom ability built into the ColorSplash.
