Flip Ultra HD Fork Mounting

Sunday I took the Flip out with me on the trail trying to mount it to the front fork and handle bars. In both cases it came loose far too often. I was hoping to get some sample from that ride but after looking at the footage it was too jumping. I trashed it all and started thinking of how I could MacGyver the Flip to the front fork better.

After some thought, Monday night I rigged up a ghetto mount out of some metal braces and furniture rubber feet floor protectors. Oh and no less than 5 zip ties. It is not very portable since I have to cut the zip ties to get it on and off each time.

As I rode it seems to keep tight with the fork and not jump around. I never had to stop and tighten it once. But again, it is pretty ghetto fabulous. Here is a quick video with a few clips from my riding on Monday night. There are photos of the Flip mounted to the front fork in the video.

Here is the GPS track I recorded with my iPhone. Map has mile markers and elevation/speed charts are below

Thanks to all the fine people that build and maintain the trail area. They are in prime condition right now so go out and ride them!

  1. Cool video. Other good viewpoints that I have seen are from the seatpost, both forwards and backwards and some at fork level be apparently near the waterbottle cage. Jeff Kerkove use to do a lot of different angles with his POV cam. Not sure on the attachment.

  2. Thanks. Check out these other tests. http://www.husar.us/blog/archives/7190 They worked great while testing not so good when on the trail. The camera needs to be braced up against something to keep it from shaking and the mounting hardware coming loose.

I hope to get some backwards video soon. I think it will be easy enough to just mount it like that link above but brace it against the seat post with a few rubber spacers.

  3. I like where you going with this, but there is too much movement for me. Maybe if you could mount it to the frame instead to get a shot that doesn’t pickup every millimeter of movement in the handlebars.
