I had a chance to finally see Shutter Island last night on DVD. I wanted to see this movie in the theater but never found the time. My favorite Leo DiCaprio movie is The Beach so I compare most of his movie to that one. Basketball Diaries is a close second. I went into this movie with high hopes after seeing the trailer in the theater.

I made it a point not to read anything about the plot or reviews on the web before I watched the DVD. Just from the trailer I knew that it was going to be a suspenseful ride with a few snags along the way. Overall I thought it was a well made movie with the right actors in the right roles. Nothing bugs me more than what I consider the wrong actor in a role. No real logic or science to it just a personal preference. Ben Kingsley as Dr. Cawley was just about a perfect casting. Ben Kingsley’s role even got better as the movie started to finish up.

This movie had me thinking from start to finish trying to figure things out. I don’t want to spoil the movie for anyone but I held out hope until the credits rolled that Teddy Daniels would come out on top. Thinking about it afterwords I choose to think that they screwed him all along and his reality was right. I always go for the underdog so when they don’t come out on top I get frustrated.

How does Shutter Island compare to The Beach and Basketball Diaries? Tied in second right there with Diaries for a movie starring Leo. I highly recommend picking this movie up, renting or purchasing on Direct TV. I give Shutter Island 4 starts out of 5. Well made, acted, and kept my attention the entire movie. Well worth adding to my personal library.

If you don’t own this movie yet and want to pick it up you can do me a solid and buy the movie from the Amazon link above or right here

  1. Thanks for the review. I’ve been thinking about picking this one up. I’ll give it a few weeks to come down in price. Hey, did you happen to do a search for Leonardo DiCaprio on imdb.com? Under his name are listed the movie titles “Akira” and “The Neverending Story”. Are they going to remake these flicks? Crazy.
