On our last CO vacation Noah and I tried to get up to Bison Peak. Unfortunately Mother Nature was not cooperating. After seeing the GPS track I am grad we turned back when we did. We were a good ways from the peak and we were about to hit the steepest elevation gains of the hike. This is going to be a hike that we attempt again for sure. The peak is just incredible with the rock formations. They say there is nothing like it in the entire state of CO. Make me sad that we did not reach it this time. But that is just another reason to head back to CO for another attempt.

Don’t forget when you roll our cursor over the map there are photo and elevation links at the bottom of the map.

I created a bunch of panoramas while out in CO on vacation. I used the AutoStitch app on my iPhone to process them. Most of these were put together from between 3 and 7 photos taken with my iPhone 4.

Using the AutoStitch app will allow you to crate these at full resolution. Some of them are close to 10,000 pixels wide. This is plenty big to having printed. I plan to have a few of these printed, framed, and hung in my son’s room. Look for an update on how well they printed in the future. The image you are opening up are only about 1024 pixels wide.

Hiking to the top of the Great Sand Dunes was one of the best parts of our trip. I used my iPhone 4 to shoot parts of the hike. If you ever get the chance to make it to the top of the dunes I highly recommend you take the opportunity. Took up a little over an hour of walking in the sand. The large, main dunefield covers approximately 30 square miles and rises just under 1000 feet of climbing elevation. ALL ON SAND!

Noah and I have decided to start climbing the Colorado 14′ers. The highest I have been up is around 13,000 ft and Noah about 11,000 ft. Many people set the CO 14′ers as a goal and now we are joining the quest. This is going to a pretty big adventure spanning many years.

I am making plans right now to spend a week out on CO this July. I am thinking if we can hit three 14′ers this summer I would be pretty happy. I am not sure what Noah’s aptitude will be for the 12,500+ elevation range so that might be a problem. Other than manageable exhaustion the elevation has not effected me much on my trips into the mountain. Everyone reacts a little different so I we will just have to see. I am sure by the time we finish this quest I will be the one that is having a hard time keeping up.

You can plan on a full trip reports, GPS, photos, and video from each attempt over the years. This adventure might turn into its own blog some day. For now here is a Google map of all the CO 14′ers color coded by different areas. I think we will be focusing on the Aspen area with the Red icons starting in July.

For the last three years I have been thinking about getting a canoe. I did a little canoing as a kid. The one thing that has stopped me is I don’t know any decent float routs around here. But they are there since kayaking and canoing are pretty popular in Iowa.

Tonight I found these clear canoes that are just too sweet. They are about 1500 which is not a bad price at all. They are about 40 pounds which is lighter than an aluminum canoe. They are made from the same materia that bulletproof glass is made from. I have not see one in person but I imagine they are pretty tough.

Check out the photos.

They are sold via this website http://www.clearinflatablekayak.com/. I have to say their site is pretty “designed by a friend of a friend” feel to it. Not sure about ordering from them online. Still pretty cool looking.

What a weekend! I put in an egress window with my Father in-law and it was a ton of work. It is going to be a week before my body recovers. I will post photos, video and more details about this experience tonight. Pretty sure I am won’t be doing that home improvement job any time soon.

Other than the window install I was able to get in a Sunday night single track ride at Center trail. Even though my body was hurting and I was really tired I had to get out. The weather was just incredible all weekend. I couldn’t let it go to waste on back breaking window install labor.

Here is the GPS track and some other details form my ride. The trail was empty so I did not see another sole riding on the dirt.

I mounted my Flip to my bike and did some more video testing on the trail. I had a few issues keeping the mount tightened down. When it comes lose the video is too shaky. But, when it is tight the HD video looks awesome so I need to figure out a fix. I have a few ideas on fixing the mount so it doesn’t come lose so easy. I will post the video and some additional comments later this week after I get a chance to process the video.
