New/Old Bicycle
We have a neighbor that is moving. A few weeks ago they had a garage sale and I picked up a year’s forgotten bicycle. A Bianchi Axis that that had not been taken out of its stall in maybe 10+ years. Covered in dust, tires dry rotted, tapped over and lots of tacky add-ons. I couldn’t pass it up for $10 despite having too many bicycles in my own stall. Wife rolls her eye. I knew with a little TLC, soapy water, sponge, and a toothbrush I could make her new again. She just might make a nice light gravel roller. Cue 6 Million Dollar Man music. Today I found the time to revive...

With all this Kindle Fire/Android talk lately I needed to make an Apple post. Can’t think of a better one than Every Third Thursday’s new project from Signal Snowboards. Putting an iPad into a ridable snowboard. Very cool! Also check out their Fender bass snowboard build and their Lethal Weapon Paintball build. The ETT team is just...

I took the day off work for a few reasons. My birthday is on Saturday, we already had Friday off at work, and I wanted to give myself an early present. A present in the form of a long run. My longest run in fact. My longest run was a couple of months ago and was 15 miles. I have hiked farther than that in the CO mountains but not running. I woke up this morning and realized that it was freezing out. Not figuratively but actually. It was 32 degrees. I laid in bed and told myself that Friday is going to be 50′s. The run was going to be hard enough. Why make it more painful with the cold...

Sunday was the Du race. I have done this race one time before about three years ago. Back then I did it solo and it was longer with a bike, run, bike format. This year the format was a 2 mile run, 10 bike, 2 run. My friend Ryan was doing the mountain biking and I the runs. I was fully recovered from my half marathon last weekend and expecting a decent couple of runs on a 70 degree fantastic day in Iowa. The relay and solo open group all started together as we headed up into the woods about 1:00 PM. I was about mid pack as everyone settled into the single track. There is only enough enough...

I stumbled around this page today. It allows you to enter your race distance and time to create a race pace band. You can cover it in clear tape to protect it against sweat and the elements. I plan to use this on my next long race. Here is an example of a three hours and fifty minute marathon pace race band I created as a test. Create your own race pace band at...

The year is slowly winding down. It is getting colder and the running race season is about over. I did not make my original goal of a full marathon this year. As I have mentioned already injury and a compressed time line were conspiring against me. But on a positive note, I did reduce my half marathon time by almost six and a half minutes. I made the mistake last year of not running after the half in 2010. That is what really killed my full marathon hopes this year. I am determined to not let that happen again. What’s next for a running challenge? I have decided to focus on running...
