New/Old Bicycle
We have a neighbor that is moving. A few weeks ago they had a garage sale and I picked up a year’s forgotten bicycle. A Bianchi Axis that that had not been taken out of its stall in maybe 10+ years. Covered in dust, tires dry rotted, tapped over and lots of tacky add-ons. I couldn’t pass it up for $10 despite having too many bicycles in my own stall. Wife rolls her eye. I knew with a little TLC, soapy water, sponge, and a toothbrush I could make her new again. She just might make a nice light gravel roller. Cue 6 Million Dollar Man music. Today I found the time to revive...

Sunday was the Du race. I have done this race one time before about three years ago. Back then I did it solo and it was longer with a bike, run, bike format. This year the format was a 2 mile run, 10 bike, 2 run. My friend Ryan was doing the mountain biking and I the runs. I was fully recovered from my half marathon last weekend and expecting a decent couple of runs on a 70 degree fantastic day in Iowa. The relay and solo open group all started together as we headed up into the woods about 1:00 PM. I was about mid pack as everyone settled into the single track. There is only enough enough...
Read MoreDeath of Biking Updates
If you have not noticed there has not been a lot of biking updates here. I have actually bought a new tour bike that I have dubbed The Mothership and have started a new blog that is dedicated just to my biking adventures. The new site is called Pirate Velo and the site is located at http://www.piratevelo.com. Everything biking will be found there now instead of here. I have big plans this summer to ride my bike from my house in Iowa to my home town in Wisconsin. It is about 450 miles and will take me 5 days minimum to complete. I have planned my own rout and have already posted the...
Read More1969 Schwinn Typhoon
I found this gem on Craigslist today. It is a 1969 Schwinn Typhoon. I love the color and it is in great shape. It is 100% original parts from what I van tell. I could not resist it. We have no room in our garage and Terra won’t be happy but what the heck. The handle bars have some scrapes in them so I will try to find some original new ones eventually. I need to remove the reflective stickers on the front and add a little polish to the rims. The frame is scratched but that just adds to the cool vintage look. It is crazy to think that this bicycle is over 40 years old. I wonder what...
Read MoreNext Fixed Gear Century
Now that I have done my first fixed gear century I am planning another one. This time I won’t be venturing out in the crazy wind or cold, sunless skies. I will wait for a perfect day to attempt this next adventure. Now that the High Trestle Trail is complete I plan to make that part of the next century. Here is a photo of the 13 story trestle that is the flagship of the rout. The HTT connects Ankeny, Sheldahl, Slater, Madrid, and Woodward. The trail is 25-miles long and cost $15-million. I took the time to map out a rout in Google maps, then convert to a GPX, then load to GPS...

Here is the rout from my GPS logger. I also mapped the photos I took with my iPhone to the map using EveryTrail. Most of the photos are just of my Swobo Sanchez. Enjoy. EveryTrail – Find the best Hiking in...
