Next Fixed Gear Century
Now that I have done my first fixed gear century I am planning another one. This time I won’t be venturing out in the crazy wind or cold, sunless skies. I will wait for a perfect day to attempt this next adventure. Now that the High Trestle Trail is complete I plan to make that part of the next century. Here is a photo of the 13 story trestle that is the flagship of the rout. The HTT connects Ankeny, Sheldahl, Slater, Madrid, and Woodward. The trail is 25-miles long and cost $15-million. I took the time to map out a rout in Google maps, then convert to a GPX, then load to GPS...

Well, I did it. My first fixed gear century is under my belt. I started out from my house with the goal of getting as close to Jefferson, IA as possible and get passed the 50 mile mark. Then all I needed to do was turn around and head back home. I started out with sunny blue skies. I thought to myself this is going to be a great ride. The sun lasted about 15 minutes and then I never saw it again. Complete overcast the rest of the trip. I had no idea the wind was going to be as strong as it was. Looking back I would have never starting this adventure had I know it would be that bad. ...

It looks like Mother Nature is going to cooperate with me. The fixed gear century is on tomorrow. I really don’t have any business doing this right now. I am there mentally but not physically. But like most things I do it is half planned. I guess that makes it more exciting. I am rolling solo as of right now. Just me and my Swobo Sanchez. I am spreading everything out and this is the extent of my less than ultra light gear. I was hoping to avoid putting my CamelBak on for this one. I picked up a under saddle bag that is big enough for everything except the food and water that will go...

You might not know it but Google Maps the ability to display bike paths. Early last year I discovered this but I am not sure when they start mapping trails or how they verify them. I have read that the Des Moines area has something like 600 miles of trails. Not sure where I read that or if it is true so feel free to correct me if that is wrong and I will update the post. I was poking around on Google Maps today as I look at my fixed gear century rout for tomorrow. I am pretty sure they did a major update to the Des Moines trails because Google Maps now has a few trails that are in the...
Read MoreFirst Fixed Century this Saturday
As long as the weather holds on Saturday I am planning to do my first fixed gear century. The rain lately has really been killing any thoughts of riding so I hope the weather forcast holds true. I plan to do the Racoon River Trail up to Jefferson and back. From my house I think that is 55 miles one way. I have never gone up that far on the trail and certainly never did that kind of milage on a fixed gear bike. I would love to know the the number of pedal rotations 100 miles is for my gearing. I am sure someone could figure that out based on my gearing. For those of you that don’t...
