GPS Tracks on Pindropr

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

pindroprlogoI am now able to load GPS tracks to the Pindropr site. I am pretty excited about this. Using my AMOD data logger + point and shoot camera + mountain bike (or hiking) I can create some pretty cool visuals of the trails. This will also be great for CO backpacking in the summer. Here is a screen shot of the current trails I have logged and a few photos on them.

If you want to give this a try on the Pindropr website try this pindrop to get you started. Zoom out a little and you will see the full trail. Click a marker to see a photo on the trail. http://www.pindropr.com/?pin=1523

NOTE: I am going to be updating the position of the photos to get them exact on the trail over the next week. More photos will be added as I get out and ride more over the summer. I think I will let it get a little greener before I make a big effort to get more photos on the map.

Chasm Lake Pindrops

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

I just dropped about 20 photos on the Pindropr map. This are around the Chasm Lake area in Estes Park from back in 2006. I did a 4 days solo backpacking trip. Doing that trip solo was an incredible adventure that I won’t soon forget. I have a lot of photos to add to Pindropr from that trip and these are just the first ones that I have got to.

How that Noah is old enough I am really looking forward to the next 10 years or so and getting him and I out to CO every year to backpack.

Sandbeach Hike

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Here is another possible hike I have mapped out. It is in the Wild Basin area of Rocky Mountain National Park. This is the Sandbeach Trail and ends at Sandbeach Lake. There are 6 camp sites at the Lake and one way distance is just a little over 4 miles. It is a little questionable with 1900′ in elevation gain. Not sure if the kids could make that or not. I guess there is only one way to find out.

Estes Cone Hike

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Well, our vacation time is fast approaching. With my calf hurt I am still not sure if we can go. So we are going to play it by ear right up to the departure date. I guess that is one good thing about driving. No worries about canceling your transportation.

With my leg hurt I have been thinking about what we could hike. On my first CO solo trip I went by Estes Cone but did not make it up to the top. It is pretty flat from Long’s Peak Ranger Station to Estes Cone. But it is a good scramble to the top of the cone. I am starting to think that this might be perfect for a family hike. One way it is 3 miles. So 6 miles round trip is about as much as I can put the kids. As long as it is nice we can take all day and not rush the little legs. The Ranger Station elevation is about 9400 and the cone tops out a little over 11000. So it is high enough for the kids to feel the effects from the lack of oxygen, not to mention a great view from the top, and give them something they can feel good about accomplishing.

I jumped on Google Maps and created the rout from the Long’s Peak Ranger Station to Estes Cone. If anyone else has any ideas for a good day hike less than a 6 miles round trip in the Estes Park area let me know.

Kids Backpacking Gear

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

I have been looking for kids gear for backpacking/camping off and on since last summer. Most of what I have found online is just toys and not worthy of a real backpacking or camping trip. Well I finally found a site dedicated to kids gear. BINGO. The site is UpsideOver and just exactly what I have been looking for. If you have kids and enjoy the outdoors this is the site for you.

Click the logo for the jump.
