Super Saturday Single Speeding 56.7 Miles

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Saturday was one hell of a ride or should I say rides. It started out really cloudy so I waited until after noon to jump on my single speed and hit the road.

I headed downtown on my normal rout taking the green belt to Grand. Then jumping over to Grays Lake and around the back side of downtown to El Bait Shop. I had a big plate of nachos, a stout, a porter, and a pale ale. After that I jumped back on my bike and headed back home. Here is the full rout. Total miles was 29.1. There are a few photos from my iPhone so zoom in for a closer look and click on the icons.

After making it back home I was pretty spent. I crashed for a few hours. After I woke up I was planning to meet up with Justin and Sam downtown. But I decided to head over to the Beaverdale Live street party. The Josh Davis Band was playing and I have not see them play in a while. So about 7:30 I threw caution to the wind, jumped on my single speed, and started pedaling to Beaverdale. I met up with a few friends and had a few beers. But the time I left it was almost 11:00. Just a few blocks from Beaverdale Justin and Sam called and said they were downtown still. Against my better judgement I decided to reverse directions and head west to downtown. Fueled by Coors Light and my trusty $100 single speed I bought off eBay I was on my way.

After Justin guided me to Shorty’s we had a Fat Tire and decided to head out. I follow Sam from downtown back to the West Side. For some reason Sam decided to take me through the back side of Denmans. I am on a road bike by the way. Sam is on a mountain bike. It was crazy muddy. I turned into a big mistake. Sam must have fell 6 times. I pretty much ran my bike the entire way. When we finally came out of Denmans over by Valley Junction I was covered in mud. Sam and I parted ways as he took more back road muddy trails and I stuck to the street.

After that I was motoring. Now fueled by the thoughts to being able to crawl into my bed and sleep. The streets were pretty empty and it was a little euphoric riding after 1 AM in the morning through the street of West Des Moines. I finally made it home at 1:30 AM. I had to stop twice to tighten my crank. That was a total bummer. I thought I fixed that but I guess not.

Here is the GPS track from the PM ride. Total miles was 27.6 mile. Zoom into the map and click on some of the icons for a few photos.

Total miles for the day was 56.7 miles. Yeeeehaaa!

Today my legs are pretty beat. I am happy that my Swobo will be delivered on Monday. Next up is a century in the goal on the new bike!

Today’s 13 Mile Single Speed Loop

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

I jumped on the single speed tonight after doing a few things around the house after work. I am planning to do a century so I need to put in some miles during the week to keep the legs going.

Here is the loop I ended up doing. Going north from my place I jumped on the trail system. To be honest this is not a very good rout. There are a lot of curves and you can’t really get any decent speed without breaking numerous time along the way. I think doing this rout on a fixie would not be a good idea when you are not running any brakes. But the one thing I do like doing on this rout is tracking down other bikers and passing them on my single speed. Good times!

Single Speed Tour Map with Photos

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Here is what I managed to do yesterday on my single speed. I tracked the entire trip on my iPhone using the MotionX GPS app. I just started using this app and ordered a bike mount for it yesterday. More on the app in a later post. I also managed to snap a few pics with my iPhone along the way. I used Google Earth to combine the GPS rout and the photos. All the photos are around the downtown area so zoom into the map to see where I took them. Click the camera icons on the map to see the photos.

I have never liked riding a road bike. Dirt is just too much fun. Some how a single speed makes road fiding okay I guess. But I have to say that putting in miles on my single speed has helped my overall biking fitness. I can tell the difference when I am on dirt. Legs are stronger and cardio is better.

So this brought me to the idea of doing some long road work on my single speed. Thus my first attempt at putting in a 30 mile ride around town. See the post before this one for my planned rout. I stuck to it pretty close except for a few wrong turns and then extra miles at the end to reach my goal of 30 miles.

The ride was much easier than I thought it was going to be. I did the first 9 miles or so in about 30+ minutes. When I got downtown I had plenty of time to stop and take a few photos. Today I am feeling just an overall soreness. From my butt to my legs and back up to my fingers. They all ache a little. But it is a good ache.

Here is the full rout I took as tracked by my iPhone. The start and end point is the green house icon to the west. I encourage you to zoom in to the map to click the photo icons that are in the downtown area.

Date: Jun 3, 2009 4:49 pm Distance: 31.1 miles Elapsed Time: 2:10:23 Avg Speed: 14.3 mph Max Speed: 30.6 mph Avg Pace: 04′ 11″ per mile Min Altitude: 674 ft Max Altitude: 977 ft

My single speed preformed pretty well considering I picked it up of eBay for a $100 and some change. I have added new tires, a Surly Singleator, and adjusted the break but that is about all. I managed to fix my crank issues without buying a new one. So I am happy about that. I think next I will put some bullhorns on it to stretch myself out a little. I am still only running a front break and to be honest it is not the best stopping power. I would not go down Grand Ave. hill with the break I have now. If a car pulled out I could not stop in time with the current setup. Might need to address that soon.

Overall this ride was a lot of fun and I can tell the work I am putting in on the road is elevating my overall fitness. The winter fat I managed to put on is slowly coming off. My legs are getting so much stronger. My summer goal is to get in a long 30-50 miles ride once a week. Add that with mountain biking every change I get, some core lifting at the work gym, and I will a machine by mid summer.

30 Miles Single Speed Plan

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

I am going to attempt a 30 mile bike ride tonight on my single speed. Never gone that far before. Checkout the map below of the projected path.

Start and end at the little house icon. Red path is stage 1, green is stage 2, and purple is stage 3. This takes me from the west side all the way downtown and back. I figured out a path that did not track back on itself. I am trying to stay on the paved paths around town as much as possible.

I marked this out on Google Maps by hand and it comes to 26.92 miles. Hope in the final tally puts me at 30 miles. Barring any mechanical issues (which are entirely possible on the bike I am riding), any physical breakdowns (which is also possible with my depreciating body), or any crazy acts of nature I think I am going to be pretty tired tonight.
