The Mac Mini has been in use now for more than a week. It is time to provide some details on what media center applications I am using the most. There are only two options in my opinion that are worth looking at. It comes down to Boxee and Plex. I am not going to give a full review of each app because it has been done thousands of time already on the web. If you want to learn more about Plex and Boxee just check them out on the web. What I am going to focus on is what specifically I like about each.

Mac Mini Update: Plex or Boxee?
Wednesday, March 18th, 2009Direct TV Update
Monday, December 3rd, 2007
Well, I have not officially given an update on Direct TV since it was installed. When I first got it installed I was not happy with it. Cable HD was clearer to tell the truth. It has taken me some time to adjust to the Direct TV DH channels. It really is a different between the color the sharpness of Cable HD and Direct TV HD. Direct TV certainly has more channels but some of them are really compressed and don’t look that good. After a lengthy evaluation the Direct TV is better I think. Doesn’t sound too confident does it. At its best Direct TV is better. I used to notice little jaggies around the football players on cable despite the picture being really good. On Direct TV I don’t see those jaggies and it comes in much quicker.
The Discovery Channel and the Smithsonian Channel are my favorite. But it depends on the program and how much it is compressed. But I am happy. I will cancel everything other than basic cable for Ella and Noah’s room and cable internet. Well, I will cancel it if we could get through when we call!
Any who, I will post a photo or two of the setup later this week. I have the Direct TV receiver and the Toshiba HD player all setup and placed under the bar. The satellite is mounted on the roof behind the house out of anyone’s view so I am happy about that. It give me a perfect view south.

Amazon had a deal last week. A Toshiba HD-A3 and 10 HD-DVDs. Now 10 HD-DVDs would cost a minimum of $200 so when the final price was $197.21 delivered to my door with two day shipping I could not resist myself much to Terra’s dismay.
Media Center: Part 2
Thursday, November 22nd, 2007In this, part two, of my media center project I am looking at different media center applications. Each of these has their own pros and cons and I tried to list them as they applied to my own needs. They may be different for your own project so please evaluate them on your own and make your own judgement. Also make sure you read Media Center: Part 1.

Monday, November 19th, 2007Since I bought my HDTV I have been consumed with building a home media center. Well not consumed but it is the reason for my not posting much to the blog lately. After lots of research, trial and error, numerous posts to forums and friends I have my plans in place. Of at least I think I so. This is the first of a series of posts on my efforts to build my media center.
