Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Here is the second video from our Colorado trip a few weeks ago to hang out with friends and see The Nadas. The venue was http://www.ghostranchsaloon.com/. It is a great place to see live music. You can check out the Nadas at http://thenadas.com/blog/ but I am sure you already know that.

Water Park Video: Gallons of Fun

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Here is another video of the kids at the water park up in Wisconsin. The big bucket drops every minute of so. Ella is hamming it up in this one. No surprise there.

Duchess Video

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

When our cat Tut died we realized that we only had one picture of him. I am sure we took more but they were not digital so they are buried in a pile of photographs that we probably will never go through. Sad but true. Now with out golden/lab Duchess getting older I decided to get some video of her so we can look back after she meets her maker.

Nothing too special about this video. It is just Duchess fetching. She has bad hips but will play catch with you until she can’t walk any more. When she was younger she was a great Frisbee catcher as well. I will try to think of something more creative for the next Duchess video.

Why I Don’t Host My Own Video

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Scott asked a pretty good question why I don’t host my own video. I though others might be interested in so I decided I would turn it into a post.

I could certainly host the video on my hosted server. I don’t host a server out of my house any more. Cable bandwidth is just not enough. When I add in the fact that cable does occasionally go down external hosting is better for my needs.

Just like flickr for photos Vimeo has a nice social scene when it comes to sharing my videos and looking at what others are doing. For example I belong to a group called Pocket HD. Like the name says the group is for people with small hand held HD recorders like the Flip UtraHD that I now use. You can add your videos to groups and share them with others in just about any other topics you can imagine. Vimeo also has a weekly video challenge that I want to eventually start doing as soon as I get through all my vacation video.

Eventually server space would catch up with me on my host even if it took a could of years. Also, if I wanted to launch my movies in a Flash based player I would have to spend time to compress the video on my own which does add considerable amount to time to the process. Upload to Vimeo and have them do the compress is much less time on my hands. Even if it is just waiting for the compression to finish most of the time.

I do have a local copy on my home media Mac Mini HTPC for backup. But I find I still like to stream the videos via Vimeo. When people come over I can show them right from Plex on my HTPC. The experience is pretty nice. Check out these screen shots of Vimeo via Plex.

Right now it is easy to use Vimeo and I do enjoy the social aspect of it. I guess those are the main two reasons I don’t host them on my own.

Vimeo Desktop Uploader

Monday, September 21st, 2009

I got in on the beta of the Vimeo Desktop uploader app. I have to say that even as a beta it is so much better than the uploader they have on their website. I have a lot of problems uploading my videos on their site but the app is working great.

You can add the title, description and tags right from the app. Probably one of the best features is the pause and continue buttons. This is not possible in the uploader on their website. There is also a nice progress indicator that is more informational than their website uploader as well. All around thumbs on to Vimeo for creating the desktop uploader.

I have a lot of video still coming from our CO vacation. I just shot some video from the Des Moines Zoo as well. I know most of this is not very exciting stuff but as soon as I get all it process and uploaded then I can get to some creative shooting.
