Blog Layout

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

I need to get a new layout up on the blog soon. Having one sidebar is annoying me these days. I have lots of sections I want to show so I think I need to find a theme with a larger footer area, larger sidebar or maybe two side bars and a way to better feature photos and videos.

I recently used the bSocial theme on The Beer Event website and found it one of the best I have ever used. Much easier to customize it than build from scratch. bSocial has lots of room for updates, feature videos, feature posts by category, and much more. I also like that it doesn’t really look like typical Wordpress driven site.

I am going to keep looking this week for a new theme. If you have any suggestions send them my way please.

WordPress Themes, Hookers, and Belly Dancers

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

What does WordPress themes, hookers and belly dancers all have in common?

99.9% of them are just butt ugly.

I totally made that joke up and I think it is pretty darn funny! I have not posted much this week. Too busy at work and a few other projects. None of them related to hookers or belly dancers by the way.

I have been looking (with little success) for a new WordPress theme to customize for this blog. I want to change a few things on the blog and don’t have the time to create my own theme. 99.9% of WordPress themes suck, fact! Visually they make me want to puke. People with no talent really should stop developing WordPress themes. Put down your computer and your copy of CorelDraw and go watch the grass grow. And to the people developing visually pleasing themes charging $79 for a single user license, you should be ashamed of yourself when WordPress is free and open source. You sir/madam are just as bad and as the no-talent theme creators. Seriously, if you are a WP admin, blogger, or developer can I get a AMEN here!?

I know, I know, someone is going to point out that I shouldn’t complain since most WordPress themes are free. Or that I shouldn’t complain if I am not going to develop my own theme. Well, to that person I will save myself some time now and comment before hand. Go fuck yourself since you are probably one of the people responsible for saturating the interweb with crappy themes and making it hard for people like me looking for a new one.

Anyway, that is all I have for you my trusty readers. All three of you.

Okay, I could not wait after seeing the new WP 2.7 features. I went a head and update this blog. Using the Automatic Update plugin it went off without a hitch. Loving the new admin UI!

iPhone + Photo + GPS + WordPress = PinDrop

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

PinDrop is a new WordPress plugin I have written to mesh my addiction to my iPhone, GPS, Photography and WordPress. The idea came to me after Scott ask if I could post photos to a map based on my current location from my iPhone. PinDrop is what I came up with. PinDrop combines three things: The iPhone’s 3G GPS, WordPress, and a Google Mashup.

Using all three pieces together allows me to post my location (lat & lon) from my iPhone to my blog along with a short message and a photo I attach. Using the built in functionality of WordPress’s mobile posting functionality the blog posts my email message for me. PinDrop then recognize that I have made a blog post from my phone and filters the post before the visitors sees the original posting. PinDrop parses out the information (lat, lon, message, photo) and inserts the data into a database table for me.

The frosting on the cake is the Google Mashup that I have written. With a little JavaScript and PHP the mashup loads all the “pin drops” from the database (that I posted from my iPhone) on the Google map with each pin based on the lat and lon position. The latest “pin drop” is displayed with a red pin and the the rest are blue pins. The map also centers on the latest pin dropped. Each pin can then be clicked to reveal a photo thumbnail and my message. Finally clicking on the thumbnail photo will show you the full size photo using slimbox (a lightbox knockoff.)

I am beta testing PinDrop over the next week or so. I need to build up as many locations as I can to make sure everything is working as expected. So you should start to see posts on the blog that tell you a new Pin has been dropped. You will then be given a link to the map to check out my message and photo.

I need your help testing. I would appreciate any comments if you view the pin drop posts. If something is not working like you think it should just let me know. If you have any suggestions after playing with the map just post a comment here or on any of the “New PinDrop” posts that will follow of the next few weeks.

ReadySetFlickr on WTC today

Monday, April 7th, 2008

weblogtoolscollection.gif I just seen that ReadySetFlickr was just announced on the Weblog Tools Collection site tonight for the 4/7 plugin releases. I will be interested to see if this has any impact to traffic or not. Weblog Tools has a pretty nice size following in the WordPress community and a great resource for new plugin and theme released.

Good thing I got the blog back to somewhat normal tonight after the database fiasco.
